Hong Kong Heartbreaker - the early career of Chow Yun-Fat
Before he became the Emperor of Hong Kong cinema, Chow Yun-Fat had
long been a star. Signing on with the Hong Kong production house
and broadcast giant TVB, his first starring role was in
the 1976 serial
(literally big river
south and north). His talent and romantic allure brought him both
recognition and more and better roles, leading up to his famous
portrayal of Hui Man-Keung in
(Shanghai
Beach, also known as The Bund) that made him a superstar
all over Asia.
While continuing to work in serial television at TVB, Chow Yun-Fat
also made a number of very early films as a contract player with
Goldig Films H.K. which exploited his status
as one of Asia's leading TV stars and his youthful sex appeal. While
few of these films provided any real showcase for the young Chow
Yun-Fat, they honed his skills and allowed him to perfect the
smouldering intensity which would later characterize his performances
and place him in the ranks of the finest actors of global cinema.
This site is dedicated to the early career of Chow Yun-Fat, when the
future and its accolades, awards and worldwide fame were but a dark
sparkle in the eyes of a handsome and ambitious young man.
