In 1982, a small volume entitled Chow Yun-Fat - Mother and Son was published. Along with many photographs of the then-rising young star was a short biography of his life to date. Already a cause of much frenzy among fans and the Hong Kong media, Chow was still far from being the actor known today but already exhibited the open and humble nature his fans know and love.

So why the title? The author's note at the beginning of the book explains:

One morning in April, the author went to look for Chow Yun Fat and told him that this book is going to be about him.

He said: "My life's been written before and the outcome wasn't good. Is there any reason to write more about me?"

I said" "There are things that you treasure and miss in your life."

Thinking, he said: "Yes, my mom."

Mrs. Chow Chen Li Fang is the person Chow Yun Fat wants to be with.

He said: "Instead of writing about me, why not write about my mother - - she is a strong person."

The Legend of Chow Yun Fat starts with his mother...

Reproduced here are the photographs, in color and in black and white, from this little fan book along with translations of the captions. It is a rare look into the early career of one of Asia's best-known and beloved stars. In a world where entertainment careers have histories counted in months or even weeks, this slim volume from more than two decades ago is a rare treasure for fans new and old alike.

Many thanks go to Amy Lee for providing the volume and to Cathleen Jamie Lao for the translations, as well as to Trinia del Rosario for making everything come together.
